A large study of more than 10,800 older adults has found that regularly listening to or playing music may significantly lower the risk of dementia. Led by researchers from Monash University, the study analyzed adults over age 70 and their long-term cognitive health.
What the Study Found
Compared with those who rarely or only occasionally listened to music:
People who always listened to music had a 39% lower risk of developing dementia
They also had a 17% lower risk of cognitive impairment
Playing a musical instrument was associated with a 35% reduction in dementia risk
People who both listened to and played music regularly had a 33% lower dementia risk and 22% lower chance of cognitive impairment
Participants also scored higher on tests of memory and overall thinking ability.
These findings came from the ASPREE study and its follow-up, which track the health of older adults over time.
Researchers note that music may help cognitive health by stimulating multiple parts of the brain, supporting memory, attention, and emotional well-being. While the study cannot prove cause and effect, it strongly suggests that music could be an accessible, enjoyable lifestyle habit that supports healthy aging.
As populations age worldwide and dementia rates continue to rise, simple habits like listening to music may play an important role in preserving cognitive function for longer.
