What Is Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)? It’s basically depression brought on by winter.
When days get shorter and colder in winter, and there’s less sunshine, some people feel sad and tired. This is called seasonal affective disorder (SAD). It’s also known as seasonal depression.
What Are the Signs?
People with SAD might:
Feel tired all the time
Feel sad most days
Sleep too much
Eat more or less than usual
Gain or lose weight
Not want to see friends
Lose interest in fun activities
Why Does This Happen?
SAD happens because of less sunlight in winter. Sunlight helps our brains make chemicals that keep us happy and awake.
What Can You Do To Feel Better?
1. Get outside during the day Even a short walk in daylight can help. Sunlight boosts your mood, even on cloudy days.
2. Try light therapy Special bright lights can help up to 85% of people with SAD. These lights work by helping your brain’s natural clock. Start using them in fall before symptoms begin.
3. Talk to someone Talking with friends, family, or a therapist can really help. Special therapy for SAD teaches you how to stay active and think more positively.
4. Stay active Do things you enjoy, even when you don’t feel like it. This helps your brain make happy chemicals.
5. Eat well Even though you might crave sweets and bread, try to eat:
Foods with omega-3 fats (like fish)
Fruits and vegetables
Healthy proteins
6. Other helpful tips
Exercise regularly
Try yoga or meditation
Keep a regular sleep schedule
Stay connected with friends
When to Get Help
Don’t wait if you’re feeling really sad. Talk to a parent, teacher, or doctor. Sometimes medicine can help, but a doctor needs to decide if it’s right for you. Two winter depressions in a row defines that you have SAD.
The good news? SAD can be treated! With the right help, you can feel much better during winter months.
