Good News for Night-Time Phone Users!
Scientists from Canada studied over 1,000 adults to find out if using phones before bed hurts your sleep. What they found might surprise you!
What Did They Discover?
The people with the worst sleep were those who used phones sometimes but not every night
80% of people used their phones before bed in the past month
Almost half used their phones every single night
People who used phones every night slept just as well as people who never used phones at night
People who used phones every night actually felt more alert during the day
Why Isn’t Blue Light as Bad as We Thought?
Professor Colleen Carney, a sleep expert, explains that blue light from phones might be more of a problem for teenagers. That’s because during puberty, eyes are more sensitive to light.
As people get older, their eyes become less sensitive to light, so blue light doesn’t bother them as much.
What Really Matters?
It’s not just about when you use your phone—it’s about how you use it:
Some apps help you relax (like meditation or calm music)
Other apps make you feel stressed or excited (like social media or games)
Should You Still Put Your Phone Away?
Professor Carney suggests trying this experiment:
For one week, use your phone as you normally do and notice how you sleep
For the next week, stop using your phone one hour before bed and notice how you sleep
If you sleep better without your phone, make it a habit to put it away earlier. But if you don’t notice a difference, your phone might not be causing sleep problems.
The Bottom Line
Using your phone before bed might not be as harmful as we once believed, especially for adults. The most important thing is to pay attention to how your body feels and what helps you sleep best!
