
Anyone who has ever tried to lift something heavy knows the feeling. The bar goes up a little, then a lot, then stops going up at all, and you start wondering if maybe your genetics topped out somewhere around "opens jars."
Turns out you might just need more time. A new study looking at competition records from more than 400,000 gym-goers around the world says patience is one of the strongest predictors of getting strong. But the story behind the study is more interesting, and more useful, than the headline suggests.
What the Researchers Did
Dr. Dan van den Hoek of the University of the Sunshine Coast and an international team dug into competition data from powerlifting meets held between 2012 and 2026. Powerlifting is a sport where athletes compete in three lifts: the squat, the bench press, and the deadlift. The "classic" version means no fancy supportive suits, just the lifter and the bar.
Out of 420,069 competitors in their database, the researchers zoomed in on 6,524 lifters who kept coming back to compete over long stretches of time. What they found sounds like advice from a wise grandparent:
Peak performance usually showed up around age 27
It took about 4 to 6 years of competing to get there
Many athletes did not hit their personal best until their 10th competition
Competing more often was linked to peaking sooner
Missing lifts early in a career did not seem to matter much in the long run
"Being able to stick at it and try, try again seems to be more important" than any single bad meet, van den Hoek said.
Great news if you have ever bombed a lift. But before you frame that quote and hang it above your squat rack, let's talk about what the numbers actually tell us.
The Sneaky Problem Called Survivorship Bias
Here is a puzzle from World War II. Engineers examining planes returning from combat noticed the bullet holes clustered on the wings and the tail. Their first instinct was to add armor there. A statistician named Abraham Wald pointed out the obvious thing everyone had missed. Those were the planes that came back. The ones hit in the engine or cockpit never made it home. Armor the places without holes, he said. Those are the fatal ones.
The same trap is hiding in this powerlifting study. Researchers looked at 6,524 lifters out of 420,069, which is about 1.5 percent. Who were those 1.5 percent? By definition, the people who stuck around long enough to build a track record. Everyone who tried powerlifting, hated it, got hurt, or lost interest? Not counted.
So when the study says "failing lifts early doesn't hurt long-term performance," what it actually means is "among people who kept going despite failing lifts early, failing lifts early didn't hurt them." Those who quit after failing are invisible in the data. It is the difference between saying "most marathoners finish the race" and "most people who signed up for the marathon finish the race." Very different sentences.
This does not mean the finding is worthless. It just means the honest version is: if you stick around, early stumbles probably will not define your career. Which is still encouraging.
About That "Peak at 27" Thing
The number 27 sounds precise. Almost like an expiration date stamped on your athletic career. But the truth is much messier and much more forgiving.
Other studies have looked at peak age in powerlifting and gotten different answers. Research on world-class competitors put the average peak age at 35, not 27. Data from USA Powerlifting found peak strength scattered anywhere between ages 24 and 49, with women typically peaking a bit earlier than men. Large studies of general strength show a broad plateau from about 18 to 35 before decline kicks in.
Why the different numbers? Because each study looked at a different group of people using different methods. A snapshot of all competitors will look different from a snapshot of only elite champions. A person's peak year depends on when they started, their sex, their weight class, and a hundred other things.
So if you are 32 and still setting personal records, the science is on your side. If you are 22 and haven't peaked yet, also on your side. "Peak age" is not a countdown clock. It is a wide, blurry window.
Competing More Helps. Until It Doesn't.
The study noted that lifters who competed more often tended to peak earlier. Good news, right? Just sign up for more meets.
Not so fast. A separate analysis found the sweet spot is about four competitions per year. Beyond that, extra meets do not add extra progress. Powerlifting competitions are hard on the body. Cutting weight, peaking for max attempts, and recovering afterward all take a toll.
There is also an important distinction the headline blurs. Competing is not the same as training. Elite powerlifters typically train 4 to 6 days per week, and surveys show most lifters average about four sessions weekly, hitting the competition lifts 1 to 2.5 times per week. More training frequency generally does help build strength, but even there the returns diminish. Doing five weekly sessions instead of three helps a lot. Doing seven instead of five helps a little. Doing nine instead of seven mostly just makes you tired.
"Missing Lifts Doesn't Matter" Comes With Fine Print
The claim that missing lifts early doesn't hurt long-term performance is comforting, but it is easy to misread.
On the competition platform, a "missed lift" means you attempted a maximum weight and it did not go up. That is a normal part of testing your limit. If you never miss, you probably never found your true one-rep max.
But do not confuse this with a training concept called "training to failure," which means grinding out every set until you literally cannot do another rep. Research on that is fairly clear. For pure strength gains, you do not need to train to failure, and in some cases pushing every set to the limit is slightly worse. It matters more for building muscle size than for building strength.
So the honest translation of the finding is this. Missing heavy attempts at meets, even a lot of them, does not doom your future. That is real and reassuring. It does not mean you should chase failure in every training session in the hope it will make you a champion.
The Beginner's Advantage Is Real
There is one more piece of context worth adding. The trajectory of improvement depends heavily on where you start.
Analyses of powerlifting data consistently show that beginners improve the fastest. In year one, athletes commonly gain 7.5 to 12.5 percent of their total. Over a decade, gains can add up to about 20 percent overall, but they slow dramatically after the early years. Weaker lifters improve faster than strong ones, and the strongest men gain the slowest of all. Women, who often start from lower absolute baselines, tend to progress faster relatively speaking.
This is called a "ceiling effect." The closer you get to your genetic and trained potential, the smaller each new gain becomes. So the average "10 competitions to peak" is exactly that: an average. Some people take five. Some take twenty. Some peak at 25 and some at 40.
What This Study Is Actually Good For
Take away the overreach and you have something genuinely useful. Coaches and lifters now have real-world benchmarks. If you have been competing for two years and haven't hit your peak, that is normal. If you missed a squat opener at your first meet, that is normal too. If a coach tells a 30-year-old they are past their prime, the coach is probably wrong.
The study gives us reasonable expectations for a very slow-cooking process. Getting genuinely strong takes years. Not weeks, not months, but years. The people who accept that are the ones still lifting a decade later.
The Bottom Line
Strength development in powerlifting is a marathon, not a sprint. The people who show up over and over tend to keep getting better, and single bad performances rarely define anyone's career. That message is worth taking to heart.
But the science underneath it needs a little more nuance than "just persevere." Persistence in this data set is at least partly a marker of people who were on a good trajectory anyway. Peak age is a wide plateau, not a specific birthday. Competition frequency helps until it doesn't. And "missed lifts don't matter" is true in the specific sense of maxing out on the platform, not as blanket permission to hammer yourself into the ground every training day.
To really prove that perseverance itself causes success, researchers would need to follow every newcomer from their very first meet, including all the ones who quit. Until then, the fairest version of the message is this: the bar goes up slowly for almost everyone, and the people who keep showing up are the ones who eventually see how strong they can become.
So if the last session was rough, the last meet was worse, and you're wondering whether it is worth going back? The data says yes. Just do not expect a miracle by next Tuesday.
