Experts on aging understand how lifestyle choices can affect how we age. One said, “The next big step in aging science is understanding how lifestyle factors slow down aging.”

That means if we can slow aging, we might stay healthy longer and only face age-related illnesses in the last few years of life.

A new study shows that one surprising factor may help slow aging: our social life. People who stay connected with friends, family, and their communities might actually age more slowly.

The study looked at over 2,000 adults and measured things like family relationships, friendships, emotional support, and participation in community groups. Researchers created a score called “cumulative social advantage” (CSA), which shows how socially connected and supported someone is.

They then compared CSA to biological signs of aging, like changes in DNA (called “epigenetic clocks”), inflammation in the body, and stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. They found that people with stronger social connections had slower biological aging and less inflammation.

Humans have always been social. For our ancestors, being part of a group helped them survive, find food, and stay safe. It makes sense that our bodies work better when we are socially connected.

The study also found that people with more education, higher income, or certain social advantages aged more slowly. This shows that both social and economic factors can affect aging.

The good news is that while we can’t control everything, we can strengthen our social lives by staying connected, helping others, and being involved in our communities. These connections may help us live healthier and feel younger for longer.
