
Congratulations. You are part plastic.
Not in a cool cyborg way. In a "scientists checked human blood and found bits of grocery bags in it" way. Also lungs. Also livers. Also placentas. Also breast milk. Also, and I want you to sit down for this one, brains, where plastic seems to pile up at higher levels than in the liver or kidneys.
I know. I did not want to write that sentence either.
Here is the thing though. This is not a "we are all doomed, throw your phone in a lake" article. Panic is useless and also boring. This is a "here is exactly what we know, exactly what we do not know, and exactly what you can do about it on a Tuesday" article. Because there is a real and growing pile of evidence here, some of it genuinely alarming, and there are real steps that measurably work. There is also a lot of nonsense being sold to you about it, and we are going to torch that too.
First, What Even Is a Microplastic?
Plastic does not really go away. It just gets smaller and angrier.
Sunlight, heat, and friction chew big plastic into tiny plastic. When the pieces get smaller than 5 millimeters (roughly the width of a pencil eraser), scientists call them microplastics. When they get smaller than 1 micrometer, which is about 100 times thinner than a human hair, they get promoted to nanoplastics.
Size matters enormously here, and not in the way you would hope. The smaller the piece, the more easily it slips through your body's security checkpoints and wanders into places it has no business being. Nanoplastics are the ones scientists worry about most.
The usual suspects showing up in human bodies are polyethylene (bags, bottles, packaging), polypropylene (containers, caps), polystyrene (foam cups and takeout boxes), PET (water bottles), and PVC (pipes and wrap). If that list sounds like a tour of your kitchen, that is not a coincidence.
And the supply is not slowing down. The world now cranks out more than 413 million metric tons of plastic every single year, and that number is expected to keep climbing through 2050. We are, collectively, a factory that never turns off.
How This Stuff Gets Into You
Three main doors. Plus a bonus door nobody thinks about.
Door 1: Your Mouth (the big one)
Eating and drinking is the main way plastic gets inside you. Microplastics have been found in tap water, bottled water, seafood, salt, honey, fruits, vegetables, milk, beverages, and processed food. Basically the whole grocery store.
From drinking water alone, an adult may take in something like 41,000 microplastic particles a year. That is roughly 112 a day, from water, which is supposed to be the innocent one.
Packaging is a huge contributor. Food in plastic pouches, food microwaved in plastic containers, and drinks stored in plastic bottles all shed particles into what you are about to swallow. Heat makes it dramatically worse, which we will come back to, because it is the single easiest fix on this entire list.
Door 2: Your Lungs
You are breathing this stuff right now. Sorry.
Airborne plastic comes from synthetic clothing, tire wear (yes, tires are plastic-ish and they grind themselves into dust on every road on Earth), urban grime, and household dust. Measured concentrations in indoor and outdoor air run anywhere from 0.0065 to 1,583 particles per cubic meter, which is a range so wide it basically means "depends entirely on where you are standing."
Indoors can be worse than you would guess, thanks to synthetic carpet, fleece blankets, and windows nobody ever opens.
And here is the one that should make smokers put the thing down: in a 2026 study, smokers were six times more likely to have microplastics in their blood. Every single patient who both smoked and lived with higher air pollution had detectable plastic in their bloodstream. Smoking may actually help plastic cross from your lungs into your blood. Cigarettes have found a new way to betray you.
Door 3: Your Skin
The smallest door. Mostly through cosmetics and personal care products made with microbeads or plastic-derived ingredients. Not the main event, but not zero.
Door 4: The Bonus Door Nobody Mentions
Medical equipment. IV lines, blood bags, and other plastic gear can introduce particles directly. File this under "genuinely important for researchers to study" and firmly not under "reason to refuse an IV." We will come back to that too, because it matters.
The Heart Stuff, Which Is Where This Gets Serious
Okay. Jokes on pause for a minute. This is the part of the article that changed the conversation.
Study One: The NEJM Bombshell (2024)
Researchers led by Marfella took 304 patients who were having plaque surgically removed from the carotid arteries in their necks. Then they analyzed the plaque itself with some of the fanciest equipment available.
They found polyethylene in the artery plaque of 58.4% of patients. PVC in 12.1%. Under the electron microscope, they saw jagged little foreign shards sitting among the immune cells.
Then they followed those patients for an average of about 34 months. The patients with plastic in their plaque had roughly a 4.5 times higher risk of heart attack, stroke, or death from any cause.
Read that again. Four and a half times.
And it was not just the particles sitting there quietly. The plaques with plastic in them were angrier. More inflammatory chemicals. More immune cells piling in. Less collagen holding everything together. In plain English, that describes exactly the type of plaque that is most likely to rupture, which is how heart attacks happen.
Study Two: Into the Coronary Arteries (2026)
Then Paolisso and colleagues went straight to the heart. They sampled blood from 61 patients right in their coronary arteries.
Among patients having a STEMI, which is the most severe kind of heart attack, they found microplastics in 84% of cases. Among patients with stable chronic heart disease, 40%. Among people with normal, healthy coronary arteries, 32%.
The heart attack patients also carried a wider mix of plastic types in their blood. Polyethylene led the pack again. Inflammatory markers were elevated right alongside.
The Mice Agree
In mice bred to develop clogged arteries, feeding them microplastics at levels you would realistically encounter in the real world increased artery damage in the male mice by 63%. Genetic analysis showed the cells lining their blood vessels changing in exactly the wrong direction.
How Plastic Actually Does the Damage
Seven mechanisms, and they gang up on you. Oxidative stress: plastic particles trigger a flood of reactive molecules that overwhelm your cells' defenses, like rust, but internal and biological. Inflammation: particles flip on alarm systems that were meant for infections, and the alarm never fully shuts off. Mitochondrial dysfunction: your cells' power plants start browning out. Endothelial dysfunction: the delicate lining of your blood vessels gets damaged and stops signaling properly. Thrombosis: your blood gets more eager to clot, and clots are how arteries close. Plaque destabilization: the plaque gets weaker and likelier to burst. Fibrotic remodeling: in animals, heart tissue gets stiff and scarred, which sets up rhythm problems and heart failure.
Beyond the Heart: The Full Tour
Because apparently the heart was not enough. In the lungs, inflammation and scarring in lung tissue. In the gut, disrupted gut bacteria, a leakier intestinal barrier, and early hints of a link to inflammatory bowel disease. In reproduction, links to lower fertility, reduced sperm quality, endometriosis, PCOS, and pregnancy problems including preterm birth and low birth weight. In the brain, associations with ADHD, thinking problems, and behavior changes, plus the brain accumulation finding I already made you read once. In metabolism, links to type 2 diabetes, altered cholesterol, and larger waist circumference. In the immune system, confused immune cells, scrambled chemical signaling, and a possible hand in antibiotic resistance. And for cancer risk, polystyrene and PVC have been flagged for potential harm through DNA damage and long-running inflammation.
That is a rough list. Now let me un-scare you a little, because the caveats are real and you deserve them.
The Honest Caveats (Do Not Skip This Part)
Anybody selling you certainty here is selling you something. Literally.
Nobody has proven cause and effect in humans. These are associations. It is possible that people who are sicker somehow accumulate more plastic, rather than plastic making them sicker. The researchers themselves say plainly that their findings do not prove microplastics cause heart attacks. That is not a technicality. That is the actual state of the science.
Measuring this stuff is really hard. No single machine can accurately size the particles, identify the plastic type, and weigh the total all at once. Different labs use different methods, so studies are tough to compare. And here is an uncomfortable one: because plastic is everywhere, including in labs, contamination of samples can never be completely ruled out.
The timeline is confusing. Plastic exposure has presumably been rising for decades. Over those same decades, heart disease rates actually went down, because we got much better at handling blood pressure, cholesterol, and smoking. So plastic cannot be the main villain of cardiovascular disease. Where it ranks compared to the classic risk factors is genuinely unknown.
We barely detect nanoplastics at all. The particles scientists think matter most are the ones smallest enough to slip past our instruments. We are studying the elephant by measuring its shadow.
Intervention research is brand new. A couple of good trials exist. That is a couple. Not a foundation.
So: take it seriously, do the free and easy stuff, and do not let anyone convince you to buy a $200 "microplastic detox cleanse." That product does not work. That product cannot work. More on why in a second.
Pros and Cons, Because Plastic Is Not Cartoonishly Evil
Cons: everything in the last several sections.
Pros, seriously: plastic is the reason IV bags are sterile, syringes are single use, and surgery is not a coin flip. It is the reason food travels far without spoiling, which cuts food waste and feeds people cheaply. It is light, so shipping it burns less fuel than glass. It made medical care, clean water delivery, and affordable groceries possible at a scale nothing else has matched.
The goal is not to eliminate plastic from human civilization. The goal is to stop eating it.
The Foods and Habits That Actually Help
Now the specific, practical part.
Tier 1: The Free Stuff That Works Best (Do These First)
Stop microwaving food in plastic. Full stop. Heat is the accelerator pedal for particle release. Move it to a glass or ceramic plate. This costs nothing and takes four seconds. If you only change one thing, change this one.
Ditch the plastic water bottle. Stainless steel or glass. Bottled water is a major source, and reusable bottles pay for themselves in about three weeks anyway.
Store food in glass, steel, or ceramic. Not plastic. Especially not hot food in plastic.
Cut back on food in plastic pouches and plastic film. Fewer plastic contact points from farm to fork means less plastic in the fork.
Buy fresh and unpackaged when you can. Produce from a bin instead of a tray. Bulk grains instead of pouches.
Quit smoking. This is on the microplastics list now too. Six times more likely to have plastic in your blood. As if you needed another reason, here is another reason.
Open a window. Ventilation dilutes indoor plastic dust for free.
Tier 2: Costs a Little Money, Worth It
Run a HEPA filter where you sleep and where you spend the most time. Use a microfiber-catching laundry bag for synthetic clothes, and wash them less often, because your fleece is shedding into the water and the air constantly. Skip synthetic carpet if you are ever choosing flooring. Switch personal care products to microbead-free versions. And reduce canned foods with plastic linings when there is a reasonable alternative.
Does Any of This Actually Do Anything? Yes. Measurably.
This is the best news in the article.
The PERTH Trial (2026) took 60 people and put them on a 7-day low-plastic diet: food sourced with minimal plastic contact from production to plate, plus plastic-free kitchenware.
Seven days. Here is what happened to the plastic-related chemicals in their urine: monobenzyl phthalate down 53.5%, bisphenol A (BPA) down 59.7%, and mono-n-butyl phthalate down 37.5%. Cutting them roughly in half. In one week. And swapping personal care products alone produced its own independent drop.
You are not helpless here. That is the point of this whole section.
Foods That May Help Your Body Cope
Important framing first: no food removes plastic from your arteries. Nothing does. Anyone claiming otherwise is lying to you for money.
What some foods may do is turn down the harm signal, since oxidative stress and inflammation are how plastic seems to do its damage. The evidence here ranges from "one decent human trial" to "it worked in mice," so calibrate your excitement accordingly.
The Polyphenol Trial (2026)
This is the strongest human evidence for the "cope better" strategy. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with 98 participants who had high microplastic exposure. They took a composite polyphenol supplement for 28 days.
Results: significant drops in three inflammation markers, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8. The polyphenols seemed to work by reshaping gut bacteria and shifting metabolism.
Encouraging. Also one trial, with 98 people, measuring blood markers rather than heart attacks. Not gospel.
Specific Foods and Realistic Daily Targets
These amounts are ordinary healthy-eating targets, not magic doses. Nobody has established a "microplastic dose" for any food, because that research does not exist yet. But every item here is good for you regardless, which is the beauty of it. Worst case, you just ate well.
For polyphenols, aim for several servings a day across different colors. Berries, 1/2 to 1 cup daily: blueberries and blackberries are the anthocyanin heavyweights, and anthocyanins are the family that includes C3G, the compound that in animal studies reduced plastic buildup in tissue and pushed more of it out through the stool (mice, not people, but still, blueberries). Green tea, 1 to 3 cups a day. Extra virgin olive oil, 1 to 2 tablespoons a day. Dark chocolate, 70% or higher, about 1 ounce (you are welcome). And colorful vegetables at basically every meal.
For vitamin C, 75 mg a day for women and 90 mg for men, which is one orange plus one red bell pepper and you are done; food beats pills here. Quercetin is found in onions, apples, capers, and leafy greens, so just eat them, no supplement needed. Curcumin means turmeric, ideally with a pinch of black pepper and some fat, because on its own your body absorbs almost none of it; cooking with it is fine and safe, while handfuls of capsules are a different conversation, covered below.
For fiber, 25 grams a day for women and 38 for men. Most Americans get about 15, which is embarrassing. More fiber may help sweep plastic through your gut and out the other end, and it feeds the bacteria that seem involved in this whole picture: beans, oats, lentils, whole grains, vegetables, berries again. For probiotics, yogurt with live cultures, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, roughly two servings a day, since gut bacteria appear to matter here, though the "gut bugs eat plastic" idea is still mostly theoretical.
And minimally processed food generally. This is the real trick. Eating fresh, whole food does two things at once: it lowers your plastic intake, because whole food has less packaging, and it raises your antioxidant and fiber intake at the same time. One habit, both benefits. That is the whole strategy in a sentence.
Can Your Body Get Rid of the Plastic Already Inside You?
Partly. Do not get your hopes up.
The good news is feces: most microplastics you swallow, especially bigger pieces, go straight through and out. Only about 0.3% of particles in the 1 to 10 micrometer range get absorbed through the intestinal wall. Your gut is a decent bouncer.
But the small ones cheat. Nanoplastics can slip across the intestinal barrier into your blood and settle in your heart, brain, liver, and placenta. Once they are there, we have no way to get them out. Your immune cells will eat the particles, but they cannot digest plastic, so they just sit there full of it, spewing inflammatory signals. That is not cleanup. That is a jammed garbage disposal. Some gut bacteria may nibble at plastic enzymatically, but this is a lab curiosity right now, not a human superpower. And plastic shows up in urine, so kidneys clear some, though how much nobody knows.
Bottom line: there is no proven way to remove accumulated plastic from human tissue. None. Zero. If a product claims otherwise, it is a scam, and now you know enough to say so at parties.
Who Should Care Most
Everyone should do the free Tier 1 stuff, because it costs nothing. But move this higher on your list if you are living with heart disease or at high risk for it (existing plaque, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, family history), since the heart evidence is the strongest there is. Move it up if you are a smoker or recent quitter (sixfold; that number should follow you around), pregnant or trying to conceive (plastic has been found in placentas and breast milk and is linked to preterm birth and low birth weight, and the kitchen swaps are cheap during this window), or a parent of young kids (their bodies are still building themselves, and they crawl on floors where dust lives, so glass and steel bottles and dishes, and skip the microwaved plastic).
Also move it up if you live in a high-air-pollution area or dense city (air pollution tracked with blood plastic levels, so a HEPA filter, and check air quality before long outdoor workouts), if you microwave plastic containers daily (office lunch crowd, this is the single highest-yield fix available to you), or if you eat mostly packaged, processed, plastic-wrapped food (both halves of the problem, one habit).
When to Slow Down or Ask a Doctor
Here is where I get pushy, because this is where people hurt themselves trying to be healthy.
⚠️ Do not refuse medical care, or stop prescribed medication, to avoid plastic.
Yes, IV lines and blood bags are plastic, and yes, that is a real exposure route worth researching. No, that is not a reason to decline an IV, a transfusion, dialysis, or surgery. The risk of the plastic is theoretical; the risk of untreated illness is not. In the same vein, do not stop a statin or blood pressure pill to chase a "natural" approach: those medications have decades of hard evidence, while berries have vibes and a mouse study. The precautionary steps in this article are the cheap kitchen swaps, not opting out of the medical system.
High-dose supplements are not the same as food. Cooking with turmeric is fine. Swallowing concentrated curcumin capsules is a drug-like decision. Talk to your doctor before taking concentrated curcumin, quercetin, or high-dose vitamin C supplements if you take blood thinners like warfarin (curcumin and quercetin can affect bleeding and drug metabolism), have gallstones or bile duct problems (high-dose curcumin can make things worse), have kidney disease or a history of kidney stones (very high-dose vitamin C can raise stone risk, and quercetin needs medical clearance with kidney issues), take any prescription regularly (quercetin in particular can interfere with how your body processes drugs), or are pregnant or nursing. The researchers themselves flagged that antioxidant interventions face real hurdles: low absorption, wildly different responses between people, and unclear long-term safety. "Antioxidant" does not mean "harmless in any quantity."
Go slow on the fiber. Jumping from 15 grams to 38 overnight will make you gassy and miserable and you will quit. Add 5 grams a week and drink more water. If you are immunocompromised or have IBD, talk to your doctor before loading up on fermented foods.
Watch your budget, honestly. Fresh unpackaged organic everything is expensive, and canned beans are one of the cheapest protein sources on the planet. If the choice is canned beans or no beans, eat the beans. A perfect low-plastic diet you cannot afford is worse than a decent one you can. Do the free stuff first. The free stuff is most of the benefit.
Watch your head, too. If this article makes you want to inspect every label and panic about every takeout container, please stop. Anxiety is a documented cardiovascular risk factor with far better evidence behind it than microplastics have. The goal is a handful of boring permanent habits, not a new full-time worry. Reduce the plastic. Then go outside and forget about it.
The Bottom Line
Plastic is in your blood, your lungs, and probably your arteries. In one study, people with plastic in their artery plaque had four and a half times the risk of heart attack, stroke, or death. In another, 84% of severe heart attack patients had plastic in their coronary blood. None of it proves cause and effect, and honest scientists keep saying so out loud.
But here is what the precautionary principle looks like in real life, and it is refreshingly cheap. Stop microwaving plastic. Drink from steel or glass. Store food in glass. Buy fresh over packaged. Do not smoke. Run a HEPA filter. Eat berries, beans, greens, olive oil, and yogurt. Skip the detox scams.
That is it. That is the list. Every item on it is good for you even if the microplastics research goes nowhere, which is the beautiful part. This is the rare health scare where the response is just "eat real food, breathe clean air, and stop nuking Tupperware."
We spent a century inventing a material that lasts forever and then used it to hold a sandwich for eleven minutes. That was a choice. So is what you do next.
Now go take the leftovers out of the plastic before you press start.
