Most Women With Menopause Symptoms Unfortunately Don’t Seek Care

A colorful assortment of vitamins and supplements in various shapes and sizes.

A large Mayo Clinic study shows that menopause symptoms are extremely common and often disruptive, yet most women are going through them without medical help.

Researchers surveyed nearly 5,000 women ages 45–60 across four Mayo Clinic primary care sites. More than 75% reported menopause symptoms, and many said those symptoms affected sleep, work productivity, and daily life.

Severe symptoms, but little treatment

About 34% reported moderate to very severe symptoms. The most common issues were sleep problems and weight gain, each affecting more than half of respondents.

Despite this, more than 80% had not sought medical care. Some said they preferred managing symptoms alone. Others didn’t know effective treatments existed or were too busy to seek help. Only 1 in 4 women surveyed were receiving any treatment.

Lead author Dr. Ekta Kapoor, a menopause specialist at Mayo Clinic, emphasized that menopause is universal and often disruptive — yet remains “underrecognized, undertreated, and insufficiently addressed” in routine care.

Why it matters

Untreated menopause symptoms can affect sleep, mood, cognition, productivity, and overall quality of life. But because many women do not volunteer this information, clinicians often miss opportunities to help.

A push for better tools and more proactive care

Researchers say new approaches are needed, including better communication, destigmatization, and the use of digital tools, apps, and questionnaires to help women recognize symptoms and discuss them with clinicians.

“Our goal is to educate both women and health care professionals,” Dr. Kapoor said. “If we make symptoms easier to identify and understand, we can close the gap between need and care.”
